Activity

Listen to the program and write down all the trees that you hear Ranger Russ mention. In your backyard or during your next walk, see if you can identify any of those trees.

Vocabulary

  • Climax Forest – a forest that has reached a mature or final growth stage in its ecosystem. Oaks and Maples are the types of trees seen at this stage.
  • Compound Leaf – several leaflets on the stem make up the leaf, e.g., Hickory tree leaves.

Fun Facts

  • Sassafras tree roots and bark have a wonderful aroma and are the original ingredients in root beer and sassafras root tea. It is no longer used as it was banned in 1960 due to health concerns about safrole.
