The American chestnut was once a dominant keystone tree in forests from Georgia to Maine. In 1904 the fungal disease that destroyed nearly all trees in this range within 30 years was recognized. Come learn more about the environmental and economic value the American chestnut once provided, the pathogen that resulted in its demise, and what is being done to restore this valuable tree.
Presenter:
Fred Behringer is a board member of the CT chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation. Recently retired from a career spanning plant science and analytical chemistry, he is involved in efforts to help preserve and protect our environment and increase science literacy. He lives in Old Lyme.
