Vocabulary Words

  • Wave – A ridge or swell on the surface of a body of water.
  • Wind-driven Wave – created by the friction between the surface water and wind.
  • Tidal Wave – regularly reoccurring shallow water wave created by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth.
  • Storm Surge – ocean water pushed up in front of the storm.

Fun Facts

A “sound” (as in Long Island Sound) is a narrow sea or ocean inlet between two bodies of land.   It is larger than a bay.  A sound contains fresh water from rivers and salt water from the ocean or sea.
