- Wave – A ridge or swell on the surface of a body of water.
- Wind-driven Wave – created by the friction between the surface water and wind.
- Tidal Wave – regularly reoccurring shallow water wave created by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth.
- Storm Surge – ocean water pushed up in front of the storm.
A “sound” (as in Long Island Sound) is a narrow sea or ocean inlet between two bodies of land. It is larger than a bay. A sound contains fresh water from rivers and salt water from the ocean or sea.
