Vocabulary

  • Pioneer Species – Plants that are the first to grow in cleared areas. Pioneer trees include Birches or the Sassafras tree.

Fun Facts

  • The Hammonasset section of the Shoreline Greenway Trail was opened in 2014. It is about 1 mile long, running along Route 1 from Hammonasset Beach State Park to local roads near downtown Madison, CT.
  • “Leaves of three, let it be.” Many people will get a rash when they touch poison ivy due to the sticky, long-lasting oil called urushiol. Jewelweed – Touch-me-Nots – can be rubbed on the rash to help relieve itching from the poison ivy oil.
  • Queen Anne’s Lace (white flowering plant) is a wild carrot.
